Warbreaker Brandon Sanderson – Book review

Warbreaker Brandon Sanderson – Book review

Title : Warbreaker Author : Brandon Sanderson Genre : Adult High Fantasy Published : 2009 Pages : 688

Synopsis…

Warbreaker is the story of two sisters, who happen to be princesses, the God King one of them has to marry, the lesser god who doesn’t like his job, and the immortal who’s still trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago.

Their world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren’s capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people.

By using breath and drawing upon the color in everyday objects, all manner of miracles and mischief can be accomplished. It will take considerable quantities of each to resolve all the challenges facing Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris; Susebron the God King; Lightsong, reluctant god of bravery, and mysterious Vasher, the Warbreaker.

My thoughts…

I really enjoyed every bit of Warbreaker. I love politics in my fantasy, this book had great political intrigue. The plot of the story is great, two sisters who are completely different, one is being sent to marry the God King. There’s a huge plot twist which just made me love this book more. The magic system is based on colors and Biochromatic breaths.

The characters in this book so fun and great to follow. I really enjoyed Lightsong’s carefree sarcasm and nonchalant banter. I loved the way Siri held her own and became her own person being forced into a unique position. Then Vivenna after receiving duty training all her life to be a wife to the god king. There was so much character growth in this book. The character introductions were done really well. I didn’t feel as though there were a bunch of unnecessary characters. I loved how the God King was portrayed in this story as well. Instead of the usual evil king. Then Vasher and his important role that he plays, this book really just took me on a ride.

The writing kept me intrigued and wanting to keep reading. The world building, magic system and characters with the plot and everything all together this book was so good. I rated this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

I hope you all enjoyed reading my review of Warbreaker. I will post a link of my Readerly Gist below as well. Stay safe y’all and keep reading and dreaming 🌸✨🦋

“Unlike anything I’ve ever read, this mind-blowing series is one of my all-time favorites.”

—Claire Legrand, New York Times bestselling author of Furyborn

My thoughts…

This is the fourth and last book in the Diviner’s series. The characters in The Diviner’s series bring me so much joy just to read. The banter, love and trust between this friend group was so great to see. Evie the main character grew so much in the series. She finally chose the man she loved and got out of that love triangle. The writing and atmosphere is amazing, it kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen.

There was a lot of character growth from all the friends in this book. Theta conquered her fear, Evie learned to be a true friend after going through a life changing situation. I love these characters so much I wish I could speak on each of them. Give details on everyone but I just want you to love these characters as much as I do Evie, Theta, Sam, Jericho, Memphis, Isaiah, Ling, Henry, Uncle Bill and Uncle Will. SN: I never remember character names but, the fact I remember everyone tells you I love this series and how attached I am to them.

The plot of trying to find and kill the King of Crows and Eye that’s controlling the dead. I just loved this series and The King of Crows was a great ending and close to the series. I definitely think this book was one of my favorites of the series. There was so much happening, my heart was ripped out and stomped on multiple times. I won’t go into spoilers but please pick this series up if you want to get attached to characters, cry your eyes out and have your heart stomped on multiple times do it. The 1920’s setting, flappers, ghosts, magic and witches you won’t regret it. I highly recommend this series if you couldn’t tell. I rated this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.

Before the Devil Breaks you Libba Bray – Book review

Title : Before the Devil Breaks you (Diviner’s #3) Author : Libba Bray Genre : fantasy, romance Published: October 3, 2017 Pages : 552

There was such fear in the world. But love was everywhere if you looked. It was the best thing about humans. That they could stare into the abyss and still open up their hearts. A spit in the eye to fear.

– Sam (Before the Devil Breaks You Libba Bray)

Synopsis…

New York City. 1927. Lights are bright. Jazz is king. Parties are wild. And the dead are coming… After battling a supernatural sleeping sickness that early claimed two of their own, the Diviners have had enough of lies. They’re more determined than ever to uncover the mystery behind their extraordinary powers, even as they face off against an all-new terror. Out on Ward’s Island, far from the city’s bustle, sits a mental hospital haunted by the lost souls of people long forgotten–ghosts who have unusual and dangerous ties to the man in the stovepipe hat, also known as the King of Crows. With terrible accounts of murder and possession flooding in from all over, and New York City on the verge of panic, the Diviners must band together and brave the sinister ghosts invading the asylum, a fight that will bring them fact-to-face with the King of Crows. But as the explosive secrets of the past come to light, loyalties and friendships will be tested, love will hang in the balance, and the Diviners will question all that they’ve ever known. All the while, malevolent forces gather from every corner in a battle for the very soul of a nation–a fight that could claim the Diviners themselves.

All the times I say, ‘Don’t see me’? With you, I wish I had an opposite power: See me. See me, Evie. See all of me. There’s a fella who loves you right here. I’m not perfect. I’m a handful. But you know what? So are you. There. Not sugarcoating it.

– Sam (Before the Devil Breaks you Libba Bray)

My thoughts…

I really enjoyed the third installment to the Diviner’s rejoining my favorite cast of characters. One thing I can say about Libba Bray is she knows how to write a great group of characters. I love this series so much solely for the characters. My favorite characters are Theta and Memphis. Evie to me is somewhat unlikeable, I feel like she’s very selfish and continues to make the same dumb choices. Evie finds out hidden secrets about her brother James.

We find out the history of a few characters pasts and who they really are, which I loved. This book just there’s so much I want to say but it’s spoilers. I’m not going to say much more because it’s the third book also. There’s different forms of representation from LGBT+, disability, to diverse characters. I love that this story is set in the 1920’s that’s one of my favorite things about this series. If you love ghosts, magic, awesome friendships, different forms of rep and a series you’ll probably never forget. Pick this up. I rated this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.

Black Sun Rebecca Roanhorse ARC Review

Black Sun Rebecca Roanhorse ARC Review

Title : Black Sun Author : Rebecca Roanhorse Genre : Adult SFF Published : October 31, 2020 Pages : 461

“I emerged from Black Sun bleary-eyed, tongue-tied, heart-swollen. This is a brilliant world that shows the full panoply of human grace and depravity. Rebecca Roanhorse is the epic voice of our continent and time.”

-Ken Liu, award-winning author of The Grace of Kings, and The Hidden Girl and Other Stories.

Synopsis:

A god will return
When the earth and sky converge
Under the black sun

In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world.

Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain.

Crafted with unforgettable characters, Rebecca Roanhorse has created an epic adventure exploring the decadence of power amidst the weight of history and the struggle of individuals swimming against the confines of society and their broken pasts in the most original series debut of the decade.

“Absolutely tremendous. Roanhorse knocks it out of the park again with an epic tale about duty and destiny that will sweep readers away and broaden the horizons of an entire genre.”

-S.A. Chakraborty, nationally bestselling author of The City of Brass.

My thoughts…

I received the ARC copy of this last year from Netgalley and never got to it. I picked up this book via audiobook a few weeks ago and haven’t able to stop thinking about it. Which is part of the reason I feel it necessary to write this review! I think if you love epic fantasy with violence, intriguing world building and interesting characters this is the book for you. There are definitely trigger warnings for this so please check them out if you feel necessary.

When I picked this book up in a few minutes of the first chapter, I was on the edge of my seat. The characters in this book are the some of the most unique I’ve ever read. Serapio is my favorite character POV as well as Xiala. I do feel as though there’s unnecessary romance created between certain characters. I don’t love romance so it’s not crucial for it to be in books I read. I felt as though the relationships were done well besides that.

I enjoyed the world building and plot of this story a lot. I found myself not wanting the book to end the closer it got to being over. After getting to know Serapio’s history and background this story had me wanting to know more. I definitely see myself rereading this book very soon. I can’t wait for the second installment to release I will be picking it up for sure. I rated Black Sun ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.

What I’m currently reading…

I’m picking up Warbreaker again after picking it up last year, getting half through and the loan expiring. I just never picked it up again but I’m glad I have and I’m loving it every minute. My favorite character is Lightsong. He’s so sarcastic and nonchalant. I love the politics and magic system in this book as well.
The King of Crows the fourth installment in the Diviner’s series. I’m loving this just as I knew I would. I’ve loved the gang of Diviner’s since the first book. The diversity between characters the friendships and bonds created. The love triangles that should’ve been figured out long time age but regardless. I hope this book brings the closure for the series.

What I just finished

The Ruin of Kings One of my favorites by far, the politics, characters , magic system, and dragons. I mean honestly what more can you ask for in a fantasy. I loved this if you want to know more of my thoughts check out my review. I rated this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.
Before the Devil Breaks You The third installment in the Diviner’s series. I loved reading this and following my favorite band of diviner’s. Libba Bray did a great job writing these characters. They’re all unique, Evie the main character can be frustrating but Theta, Memphis, Isaiah and Henry make this book so worth it. I’ve never read a book just because I loved the characters so much and needed to know what happened to them. I rated this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.
Ring Shout was a quick read via audiobook, I really enjoyed this book as well. The unique twist on the story was great and I felt it brought a lot to the story. I rated this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.

What I’m reading next…

I recently picked up All Systems Red from Libby, I noticed it was available and it’s a quick read. There’s been a lot of hype and talk surrounding this series. I hope I enjoy it love murder bot, and binge it like so many others have.
The second installment in the Chorus of Dragons series. I cannot wait to get back to this world and characters. I loved the first book so much I know I’ll love this one too. I just bought the audiobook from Libro.Fm for this one as well.
I purchased the Conductors audiobook through Libro.Fm a while ago so I think now is a good time to pick up this standalone. I’ve heard only good things about this book, I can’t wait to read it and fall in love.

I hope you enjoyed this weeks WWW, I’ll see you guys Friday with another post. Keep reading and dreaming 🦋✨🌸.

Book review: The Ruin of Kings Jenn Lyons

Book review: The Ruin of Kings Jenn Lyons

Title : The Ruin of Kings Author : Jenn Lyons Genre : Epic high fantasy Published : February 5, 2019 Pages : 560

Everything epic fantasy should be: rich, cruel, gorgeous, brilliant, enthralling and deeply, deeply satisfying. I loved it.”

– Lev Grossman, author of The Magicians

Synopsis: “Kihrin grew up in the slums of Quur, a thief and a minstrel’s son raised on tales of long-lost princes and magnificent quests. When he is claimed against his will as the missing son of a treasonous prince, Kihrin finds himself at the mercy of his new family’s ruthless power plays and political ambitions. Practically a prisoner, Kihrin discovers that being a long-lost prince is nothing like what the storybooks promised. The storybooks have lied about a lot of other things, too: dragons, demons, gods, prophecies, and how the hero always wins. Then again, maybe he isn’t the hero after all. For Kihrin is not destined to save the world. He’s destined to destroy it.”

“It’s impossible not to be impressed with the ambition of it all . . . a larger-than-life adventure story about thieves, wizards, assassins and kings to dwell in for a good long while.”

The New York Times

My thoughts…

From the moment I picked up this book and started the audio I knew it would be a favorite. I truly believe that this story being written in dual perspective of Kihrin and Talon made the story so much more interesting. Following Kihrin’s story just made me want to continue reading. I had to know what was going to happen next. This book has deep family secrets, dragons, swords, and it’s a thick fantasy book. How could you not want to read it?! The writing and world building had me immersed, the entire time I was reading. I was in no rush to finish because I was genuinely enjoying it. The plot is intriguing for sure the twists and turns this book takes you through, I had to hold on too my seat. I enjoyed my time reading this book and I definitely think it’ll be going on my favorites. I rated the Ruin of Kings ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.

What I’m currently reading..

The Ruin of Kings Jenn Lyons

The Ruin of Kings Jenn Lyons I’m really enjoying this book. The world building and characters are extremely interesting. I’m reading the ebook as well as listening to audio.

What I just finished reading

I picked up HeartStopper on a whim one night while I was working. Let’s just say all it took was the first book and I was hooked. When I got Vol 1 I’m glad I decided to pick up 2 and 3 as well. I binged them all the same night. The first book gave a lot of background on Charlie’s past extremely toxic relationship. These graphic novels show a lot of character growth. They’re heartwarming and honestly just the more you read the more you fall in love with the characters. I loved vol. 2 and 3 the most only because it was more about Nick and Charlie. Their are trigger warnings so definitely check them out if you plan to pick this up. I rated each vol ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.

What I’m reading next..

This is always the hardest question, I have so many unread books on my kindle it’s crazy. I will list a few of the books I’m thinking about starting.

I received this book as an ARC copy from Netgalley a while ago and never picked it up. I’ve heard good things and definitely think I will enjoy this!
I’m hoping to continue on in the A Chorus of dragons series. I’ve been enjoying the Ruin of Kings so I definitely see myself continuing on with the series.
This series has been sitting on my shelf for about a year now. I read ACOTAR last year and loved it, since then I’ve wanted to read SJM’s other series. This book has all the makings to be something I’ll love and I hope I do.
Continuing on in the ACOTAR series. I didn’t read a Court of Frost and Starlight because I didn’t want to be disappointed. I’m beyond excited to dive back into one of my favorite worlds. This book focuses on Cassian and Nesta, I wasn’t a huge fan of Nesta in the beginning but she grew on me. I can’t wait to pick this one up.
I picked this audiobook up last year, I was really enjoying it but I was listening to the audiobook through Libby and my loan ended. I enjoyed the world building, characters and magic system. I can’t wait to pick this book back up again and finish.

I hope you all enjoyed this post, definitely expect more to come. Keep reading and dreaming 🌸🦋✨
